Reviews of South China Dim Sum Bar
The food was .... fine. The potstickers were perfect, the hagao was too salty and didn't seem to have much shrimp, the noodles were salty, the beef and rice were pretty good.
Compared to the average Cape Town restaurant, the prices here are expensive!! In fact, they're even comparable to San Francisco Bay Area pre-pandemic prices, which was already among the highest in the States.
Compared to the average portion size in Asia or the States, the sizes here are tiny!! They're maybe 60% the size of what you'd find in HK, Taiwan, Singapore, etc, and 40% the size of what you'd find in a typical Chinese restaurant in the States.
Normally, this would have resulted in a 3 star rating. But since this is Cape Town where there aren't many Chinese restaurants, I'm bumping it to 4 stars.
Saturday dinner reservation is a must! At least two or three couples came in to get seated but were turned away because the restaurant was fully booked. It's a small and quaint shop space with attention to detail to the setting, the clients (on the day we were here) and the meal presentation. The menu options were smaller than I expected but did not disappoint. The staff were friendly and since we were there to try their dim sums, they kept them coming. We certainly did not have a long wait. We opted for craft beer instead of cocktails and they were really good. There's definitely creativity in the preparation and a burst of flavors to savor and tickle your taste buds. We loved it and will visit again when we're back in Cape Town.
The vegetable pot stickers and prawn laksa are honestly the best in Cape Town. 100% not overrated! Fresh and delicious!
I had the Hawker noodles with tofu - loved it. Hubby had the noodles with short rib. Deliciously flavoured. Service was great.
A shining gem tucked away in the bustling heart of Cape Town, South China Dim Sum Bar is the kind of place that grabs you by the heartstrings and doesn't let go. The food is divine, and the ambiance is charming. I can't wait to visit again soon!
Fantastic service from friendly waitresses and the food was amaaaazing! Almost tried their entire menu and was very full afterwards!
One of the best dim sum bars in Cape Town
Great food, convenient location. Potstickers and char siu bao were both very tasty.
Loved everything we ate. Amazing quality.
The food was absolutely delicious and very affordable but the service on a Friday night was shocking. Some of us finished eating before others got their meal. Everything took way too long to arrive from the food to the drinks to the bill.
Small menu and portions, but every dish lovingly made and extremely tasty. We had about 7 dim sum plates and a soup between 2 people as a lunchtime snack. Friendly service and cool Bruce Lee themed decor. Perfect!
Best Dim Sum in the country, so delicious that its addictive. Take your friends for a super chilled and relaxing and totally satisfying experience.
Been coming here for years. Last week it fell short of expectation. Something missing in the fillings of the various dumplings. Some aromatics perhaps (garlic, ginger).
Dim Sum of my dreams! Delicious. Very well priced. Chilled vibes. Welcoming atmosphere. Wait staff let you take your time and don't bother you. Perfect level of lighting. Seating not the comfiest, but its unpretentious. Booking is essential for dinner.
An adorable and casual little place with great variety in dishes. I would recommend ordering multiple dishes in a short time as they do not leave the kitchen together and the kitchen closes early. Some people at your table might finish their food before yours arrives. The only recommendation I would give would be trying to co-ordinate the dishes together better. The portions are quite small so you will need to eat at least four dishes to feel full. The cocktails were great, although not presented particularly well. There's lots of room for improvement here.
Just awesome inventive dim sum. No frills. Great value. Excellent local beer too.
They place is good they are friendly, but they didn't have what a Chinese restaurant would have,I think that they should try keeping the place a little clean. But other than that, it's very friendly
Some of the best south-chinese style dim sum I have ever had. Truly a wonderful and culturally representative experience. The service was incredibly friendly and the food was phenomenal. Without a doubt 5 stars
The wife and I come here every two months or so, usually as an early week treat. Pretty good authentic dim sum. But if you're starving, be careful - I once had 10 steam buns in a sitting plus a bunch of pot stickers and our bill was probably more in line with a "pay day outing". Quality over quantity.
Food tastes great :) but the price is a little steep, especially for the portion that you are getting. I’d definitely avoid getting tea there as you would pay R30 bucks for a small plastic cup of tea (which was probably just brewed in a big mug at the back of the kitchen)
Thought that the overall experience was quite enjoyable. Loved the array of bruce lee memorabilia. Menu is a bit limited and I wish there was more, but the food was all around delicious. Staff seemed friendly and the aromas were magnificent. Qualityof the food and the building itself exceeded my expectations based on the location.
#SouthChinaDimSum🥟🥟🥟🥟
It was our first time to South China Dim Sum and we will be back. The food was really good so was the service. It was full on a Thursday so I would recommend making a booking. Why not 5 starts - the wine by the glass must be less than 125ml. Rather get a bottle :-)
Amazing experience!
Booking is absolutely essential as they have very very limited seating and seem to only serve one round of patrons per night.
Food isn't cheap but neither is it expensive and the menu changes constantly.
Be warned that going as a group they tend to throw all orders together and in our case didn't tell anyone about this.
I highly recommend this. There are many great items on the menu and you can try them all because the portions are small and great value.
Delicious food and authentic experience.
But I do not recommend the dessert here.
As a non Capetonian, I struggle with the factory style service here. Churn them out.
Food is good! But at CT prices, average. But it is worth a visit. Manager lady is quite brash!
The food is fantastic. I would normally walk past a place like this and judge it by it's looks, but I was lured in by my family, and I wanted to stay in that restaurant and tried everything. If you like dumplings, this is the place to go
Awesome vibe, great attitude from everyone that works there and the food is easily the best dim sum I've had.
Definitely a must try. PS, make sure to book a spot before you go as tables are hard to come by.
Average. Quite expensive for very small portion of short ribs and rice. Pretty long wait and we were after the rush (9pm). Dim sum did not stand out as particulary good.
Very nice custom iced tea and great Chinese cuisine. The homeless people outside are annoying though.
The food was great. The service ws terrible, the waitress was apparently too good for us in her hipster image and there were practically no drinks to choose from. The food is expensive so don't order too much as the portions are small and drinks are a crazy price.
Absolutely love this place! A must see in Cape Town for a unique and cosy dining experience ❤️ love you Dim Sum Bar!
It’s great! Honestly some of the best dumplings I’ve had anywhere. The siu mai are fantastic, as are the lamb potstickers.
This place was heaven, the waitress was fun, the atmosphere is cozy, and the food is to die for, I would come back for sure!
Great food. Limited choice but so tasty that I can’t resist coming back.
All this at an affordable price!
What an experience and the food is unrivaled. No better place to have great food, but make sure you reserve a table as it is always packed.
Delicious chinese food and cozy little restaurant. Great service as well. Highly recommend trying it out when you're in the area.
The best, freshest, tastiest food for the best price served by the friendliest people surrounded by the coolest people in Cape Town. Great stuff.
We keep coming back! Wonderul mojitos. Small and intimate environment. Not good for large groups. Reservations essential.
Very different kind of eating experience.
Falls a little short of streetside eating in China. However, definitely worth a try.
Absolutely delicious. Every time. It's small and lovely and the food is wonderful.
Excellent delicious food but portions were way too small. Order 3 of each
Quaint setting, warm atmosphere and delicious food. I always have a great time here.
Awesome Service. Nice Taste. But the price for a small portion was quite expensive.
Place was full & buzzing. Food was delicious quite pricey as dim sum tends to be
One of my favourite restuarants in town. Fantastic food and great service.
Enjoy the dim sum offering here and consider it one of the best Asian options in the city although I do wish they'd offer more options.
Chilled out atmosphere and delicious food, good value for money for Capetown.
Exceptional food and friendly service. Make sure to book in advance though, it's generally quite busy.
I love the variety and experience. Not much seating so book a spot.
Great food and good staff. Nice spot for an evening out.
Delicious, well priced dumplings and good service.
I am quite honestly obsessed with SCDSB! It is so so so so so yummy!! Like, unbelievably good food!!
Awesome small authentic dim sum place
Good food. There's more space at the back than you think.
Nothing comes close to this masterpiece. It’s hard to review this place. Just go!
Excellent food, but not cheap.
Fantastic food and great atmosphere.
We really enjoyed the food
Food and service were great
Awesome authentic yummy food
The food is very delicious, but keep in mind that they are going to charge you if you ask for a little sauce even if they add a drop, it may be that in Spain we are not used to being charged for those things. Then we ordered wine and despite having glasses they served it to us in a glass.
Very good but a little overwhelmed by their success, hence a service that is (much) too long (especially at the end of the meal), prices that are a little exaggerated for an Asian in AS and staff that are a little tense...
Too bad it could have been “great”, it was only “good”
A very hippie place. Good dim sum.
Amazing !
