Reviews of Maria's Greek Café
Excellent service and delicious Greek food.. nestled under the trees in the square with delicious aromas floating out of the kitchen. Good coffee and dog friendly too! Recommend getting some small plates to share so you can try a bit of everything. Taramasalata is excellent and the dolmades is a must try!
Had a great meal. The food was delicious, offering a delightful taste of Greece. However, the service was a bit slow. The quiet environment and lovely setting added a nice touch to the dining atmosphere.
“Do you have a reservation?!” Mind you there were several open tables. “You’ll have to be finished by 19:00”. I was little deterred by the waiter’s comment but was starving AF!
Food: started with Zucchini falafel cheese amazing and packed with flavor.
Hummus:creamy and tasteful
Chicken skewers: excellent flavor and great rosemary presentation
Chips:great seasoning and crisp
Salad:fresh feta creamy cheese, great and fresh veggies
Very good Greek food to share. Many vegetarian options. Loved the babaganoush and Kalamata olives. Lovely terrace with many seats.
Only improvement I see would be the speed of the service that was pretty slow that night.
Can’t handle the 15hour flight from Cape Town to Greece: no problem 😉….
You have a piece of the best right here.
Drinks: homemade lemonade (? They add honey- refreshing and unique) plus freshly squeezed fruit juices
Mains: traditional Greek vegetarian (aubergine plus mucver) - very generous portions (it was our lunch plus dinner) 😝
Dessert: that coffee!!!!
All for 23 US dollars 🤯
Very good Greek cuisine experience.
Such a lovely restaurant with absolutely delicious food - the Maria's team were also amazing in helping me to organise a surprise dinner for a friend's birthday. Cannot recommend them highly enough!
Amazing restaurant with a good vibe. Food is extraordinary and the service is quick. They have lots of starter options, various mains and desserts as well. Free parking is available right in front of the restaurant.
I am Greek and this is the best Greek food I’ve ever had! They were able to accommodate me after seating a party of 25 and I was in and out in less than 30 min. The staff was very friendly and I was able to try a delicious dish that I had never had before. Highly recommend if you are craving Greek food in South Africa!
Refurbished and expanded inside and still as charming outside Maria's still serves great authentic Greek food. Whether picking through Mezze delights or their traditional main course dishes our group of six could not find fault with anything. Service is good and you can expect a relaxed and caring atmosphere.
The best! What makes it the best - the staff !! My goodness, absolute best - Lulu the waiter is an absolute hoot and the rest are amazing too!!!! Love the staff to much, as well as the owners and mangers. So friendly, so accommodating. The best
I like the outdoor vibe, sitting under the trees with cafe lights and enjoying the scenery. Food tasted wholesome and fresh. However getting a booking (even days in advance can be tricky).
A must visit if you are travelling to cape town. Off the main tourist attractions but very centrally located. Cute lighting and wonderful food!
The staff are amazing.
Wonderful atmosphere, awesome food!! Will definitely go again! Just don't leave any handbag/cellphone for a minute on the table - some snatchers prowling and they got lucky tonight 😥
This place is great, we went for a sundowner snack, and although we didn’t have a reservation, we were helped by the most friendly waiter, even though the place was fully booked!
Food was delicious and fresh. Lovely atmosphere outside under trees.
Inside needs a proper cleaning.
Maria's has a great vibe outdoors on a warm day under the trees. The service is good and the food is excellent. Little more on the pricey side but worth the spend in town.
I came here for cake and coffee one evening and the coffee was good and the Kataifi was really good I will recommend and staff are super friendly and welcoming and they have a heater if it’s a cold day
Such a great place. Fantastic meal in a beautiful location. Highly recommend it.
Very cosy corner restaurant on one of Cape Town's iconic squares, Dunkeld. Ambiance and atmosphere is intimate and warm. The menu superb and delivery fantastic. Highly recommended for an any occasion outing!
Lovely ambience and fireplace! on a cold winter's afternoon. Enjoyed our food and especially the gluten free chocolate cake!
Wow wow wow!!
Amazing locally owned restaurant with wonderful atmosphere and amazing food.
It’s located next to a open courtyard with parking.
Very yummy food for a decent price. We had lunch here and really enjoyed the break from
the sun under the trees. Great service and therefore in total a great experience.
Our first experience and a pleasant one at that. Food, service and general atmosphere was good. Ambient noise was a bit of an issue (it was fully booked) for us, making general conversation a bit of a challenge. Other than that, overall good experience and will definitely return for a date right with the missus.
Exactly as the name Genuine and a great restaurant without being pretentious Very good service And to sit outside under the threes takes me Back to Greece my favorite place to visit After Southafrica of course.
The food at Maria’s is just incomparable! My mom and I shared the mucver and triopita (portions of 4 each) and then the halloumi and aubergine salad and the baba ganoush served with pita and we were thoroughly satisfied! Great staff and lovely vibe being able to sit outside. Highly recommend!
Relaxed atmosphere, really good food, friendly and happy staff. Great experience.
The food was great, the service was superb. But the noise was horrible. No way that you can talk to your table mates. You should really do something about it. For this reason we will not be back.
Such tasty Greek food and very kind service. I had the falafel which is the vegan option and my wife got the grilled calamari which was perfectly cooked.
Awesome food and tasty cocktails!
Favorite casual dining restaurant in Cape Town. Very attentive service, no misses on the menu, and wonderful vibe from both patrons and staff. Spanakopita (ordered 4 times over the past 1.5 weeks) and kataifi were out of this world, as was the vegan salad (simple but *wow* - FLAVORFUL). Fresh juice in the morning, excellent frappes, and amazing atmosphere for dinner. Twinkle lights in the trees and outdoor dining in a comfortable atmosphere. Loveeeeee Maria’s!
Had a great dinner here this week. We were seated outside and we all loved the vibe and feel sitting under the trees and under the street lights.
The waiter & staff were friendly and welcoming and made the ordering experience enjoyable.
We had a bit of a long wait for the food but our order did not disappoint. Everything was delicious and beautifully flavorful. It was well presented and thoughtfully plated to encourage sharing amongst the table.
Considering the quality of food, we were very happy with the prices.
Highly recommended! Make sure to book in advance, it’s super popular! 🙌
If you’re visiting Cape Town this is a must!! I rarely give 5 stars across the board but Maria’s Cafe delivered on all fronts. You really get the authentic Greek experience of being seated outside in a courtyard, under trees with fairy lights intertwined. It feels like you’re at a Greek taverna in a rural village in Greece! The service was top class. The waiters were friendly, had a big smile and made you feel welcomed. If you’re not sure what to choose they give very good recommendations. I recommend going for Mezzes (tapas) but you can’t go wrong with anything you order. Everything is delicious!! Simply amazing. I’d also recommend going next door to Roxy’s for posties after your meal.
What a lovely little gem in Cape Town! I had dinner with my family at Maria's and the food was exceptional!
A bit of Greek music or colour etc to add to atmosphere will go a long way. Food good but meat choices kimited. Service: Had to call for items condiments and waited forever.
Friends who enjoy meat speak highly of the dishes at Maria’s but the vegetarian fare is absolutely delicious. The dolmathes or dolmades are perfectly stuffed with a fragrant creamy rice. Such a hit. I could have eaten an entire plate full! We also chose the sesame seed coated falafels served with hummus and pickled cabbage. All completely yummy. We arrived after work so the cappuccinos were an odd order to start with but sometimes coffee is irresistible. I will return to have everything again soon!
Love this spot - great for breakfast as well as all day authentic Greek dishes. Friendly helpful staff, allowing atmosphere
A really loud place that is too crowded. The food was awful- old muscles, raw meat, bad service, bland food, hostess potentially on narcotics. Please do not go here.
I was born over the road from this restaurant in 1967, 64 Barnet Street. My father was an electrician and used to maintain the mobile heated fans which were used in the making of wonderful Greek pastries back then. Maria's husband had a monkey as a pet which sometimes escaped and climbed a large tree in my backyard, the tree is still there today. I remember the crazy Greek parties with the traditional breaking of plates in the street.
The setting is lovely and we had heard great reviews about Maria’s, but the food is very average and did not impress. Possibly a little overpriced for the quality too. Definitely worth a try if you are into Greek food but don’t expect to have your mind blown.
Love this place
The best feta cheese I’ve tasted
Came to Maria's without a reservation on Friday evening just some minutes before load shedding. Got a table after chatting with the friendly waiters.
Ordered some mezze and wine. Food was delicious and in parts unconventionally seasoned, which we liked a lot. The calamari succulently grilled and super soft, the halloumi tasty with caper based sauce, the mussels meaty with a delicious slightly curry flavored spicy sauce.
The atmosphere was very relaxed and romantic in the old yard decorated with strings of light.
Things which were not on an excellent level, mostly matter of individual taste though:
- Tzatziki contained plenty of dill. We like it more cucumber and garlic dominant.
- Pitta was a bit dull. We think the recipe could use some tweaking.
- No olive oil on the table.
I love the food obviously the staff are always so friendly you can go there anytime and the welcome is just amazing 😀😀
Tasty food, good service. Parking can be a bit tricky when it’s busy.
First timer at Maria's..what a great evening. Cold winters night outside. But inside a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Great service from the whole team great advice on the various menu options. The food was sooooooo good.
Taramasalata....spinikopita.....the lamb flatbread.
Will def be back and recommend this spot highly.
Wonderful meal tonite at this little gem ! Had the mussels as appetizer and almost ended up licking the plate. Make sure you get a reservation. Sharon and Ray were a delight and provided excellent service.
Wonderful atmosphere in the city, friendly staff and excellent food
The MOST delicious food in Cape Town. We had the zuchini for starters, Lamb Youvetsi for mains and the Revanicake for dessert. O my sole. Excellent!!
My absolute favourite greek restaurant. The Lamb Marias main meal is the most delicious thing you will ever eat. Their mezes are all fantastic too. I don’t normally like dolmades but Maria’s are so yum. The waitrons are all vibey and make you feel welcome. I have been here many times and I have never been disappointed.
Sublime! Authentic Greek cuisine in such a cozy, beautiful spot. Service was excellent, felt very welcome. Food was fantastic! Be sure to make a reservation, it's a popular spot for all the right reasons.
Love it there at Maria's. Beautiful location on the loveliest of plazas in Cape Town. Food is delicious especially the lamb dishes. You can share a vegetarian platter as well. Very good selection of wines and the baklava cigars as a desert are absolutely scrumptious. Very friendly service! Will come again!
This is a fabulous spot. Delicious food and really friendly service. Everyone works together here as a team. There aren't enough superlatives to describe how brilliant this place is. ❤ 🙌 👏 🫶
Very friendly and welcoming. Great suggestions by our server. Delicious food and generous portions. Would recommend and return again!
Best Greek restaurant I've tried in years. Food is fresh and comes quickly. Good ambience and affordable prices.
The staff are wonderful - friendly, welcoming and authentic. Indoors has a cosy feeling and outside has a magical pavement cafe vibe. Tasty food, with vegan and vegetarian options, its an easy going place to spend some time.
A little more of Greek experience, food was overall good, but could of done with a little seasoning.
Greeks like their food well seasoned!🙂
Wonderful greek restaurant. All the food was great, service was relaxed and friendly. And its got a good vibe.
Definitely recommend, ill be back
Historical and iconic Greek place in the heart of Gardens. I love it, even more now after refurbishing.
The food is always delicious with a Mediterranean style. Very cozy atmosphere. You need to book if you want to be sure to get a table.
On a busy Friday evening, we received good service and the food was delicious and excellent. If you like Greek food, just book and go. You will be happy you did. Lovely setting and ambience also.
This place is really really good. Kind of hidden, not much tourists. Amazing Greek food, impeccable service. I recommend to reserve a table first.
Don't know why but I keep forgetting to take pictures here. Maybe because of the good company and excellent food we get here. Hardly have time to take my phone out to take pictures. A very good spread of Greek food to choose from and you can sit either inside or outside under the trees. To me it's always better outside in the breeze and the vibe form some of the other restaurants close by.
Delicious food, good hospitality, completely dog-friendly (even inside the restaurant). And portion sizes will have you overeat or have take away boxes.
Can honestly say this is the best Greek food I have ever had in Cape Town!
It's in a great spot, lovely music and staff that very attentive. We went on a rainy day in Cape Town and my day immediately became sunny on the inside as soon as I started eating their amazing food.
Such a stunning and intimate restaurant. Really felt looked after by everyone working there! Made me feel like I was in Greece almost! Plus the food was absolutely amazing 👌 great food, great service, great setting, what more could you want?
SPECTACULAR FOOD AND SERVICE !!! As you walk in this amazing Beautiful Reastrunt From the amazing plated breakfast to your main dishes to the Fabulous yummy deserts. The atmosphere will absolutely make you feel like your in paradise. The outside patio and the beautiful fresh flowers are Breathtaking:) The Almond milk Latte's have got to be one of the best lattes in the beautiful Western cape city.I had the pleasure meeting the owners all I can say is WOW and thank you for making me and my family feel right at home. Best place ever to celebrate our 32nd anniversary. Gentle, generous service and food to tell your mother about. Maria's, you continue to be the best!
Loved their baklava and mint tea with honey.
Wow food and ambience was fantastic. Tasty comfort food and awesome waiter and service. Absolutely loved it. One of my new faves. Xx
A lover of Greek food this is a sweet spot for a lazy lunch with friends and furbabies as well outside in the courtyard. Mezzes are always the popular choice when eating here.
Only had a beer, but great atmosphere and service.
Some of the friendliest service I've ever had, tasty food. Definitely a place to go back too
It was amazing food was so good and fresh and owner was friendly and staff Munir
Very professional and friendly service, good wine selection and good food. We had a selection of meze and there was light and shade, but overall it was definitely delicious!
Very good place. Damage. The kitchen is very average. Dishes deserve to be reheated better.
Delicious food, good service.
Warm welcome, very tasty cuisine and great wines...
Almost a little insider tip and oasis in this rarely visited corner of the city
Delicious Greek snacks. The place is buzzing. The atmosphere is nice.
