WOW!!! we always in awe of the natural rustic setting. Waitor Riedwaan was funny and quirky his recommendations for mains kabelojou (catch of the day) and chicken and prawn curry was exotic and delicious. Book in advance especially on public holidays so not to miss front row seats to the beauty of hermanus smashing waves and coast line.

This is a beautifully rustic spot. You can spend hours relaxing and watching the waves. Even spotting whales (time of year depending) and seals. The wholesome food on offer definitely gives a relaxed feeling. Service by the staff was top notch and they are always available to help with any questions or suggestions.

Fantastic viewpoint, perfect for quietly watching whales! Alongside that, the food is top-notch, delicious, and beautifully presented. A true hotspot right on the cliffs – the atmosphere is truly unique. I was especially impressed by the honest service: my pocket knife, which I had lost, was found and returned to me. Lovely day to enjoy a delicious seaside lunch with a fantastic view, and Bientang's Cave offers all of that. We were seated just slightly above the water's edge, and the sea breeze was so lovely in the sun. Ordered the Braised Pork Belly (R195) and the Bientang's Seafood Potjie (R230). The seafood potje had a deliciously creamy Pernod veloute, and was chockfull of seafood. Scoffed everything down, but I wished the stew was served warmer. My colleagues had the pork belly, and though I can't comment as I didn't try it, they seemed to like it.

Hands down the best seafood platter I have ever had in Western Cape! Amazing staff! Fantastic view of the ocean and watched some whales breach while enjoying my lunch and a nice bottle of white wine.

Had an amazing lunch with my husband. We were seated in the corner of the rocks, and sometimes big waves came until our table. Felt a bit more like an attraction to keep our shoes dry but was very exciting! Wish it was a whale season! Definitely would visit again.

I give this restaurant 5 stars because of the perfect place that it is situated. Right on the ocean. Beautiful views and places to sit on the big flat rocks. The food is average at best. I have had much better seafood in JHB but still worth having a table there

Had a group dinner here. Food was quite nice but was disappointed with dessert. Great view for whale watching. We managed to get a glimpse of the whales that evening. The stairs are quite hectic to walk up and down. Only heard afterwards that there's a lift apparently. Good service.

A stunning venue on the rocks...the venue is certainly unique as it is as close as you can get to the sea...the tables are even set on the rocks where the sea breaks...the path leading to the restaurant is also quite mystical...the views are lovely...

Beautiful sea-side terrace with amazing views of the ocean, sea birds, dolphins and if you are lucky, whales. Drinks are good, the food menu is pretty standard, with plenty of options to please everyone. The mussles could have been served a bit warmer but the taste was just fine. The vegi-curry and spear ribs were delicious. Service is friendly and attentive. They have a lower area of the terrace where you are literally sitting on the rocks upon which the waves break - nice and refreshing on a hot day.

We have been to this restaurant during the whale festival. Although it was very windy it was not a problem there. We had an excellent view and saw some whales. We also saw some cormorants chasing after fish. The service and food were excellent.

Great position to eat a basic meal. Staff are often abrupt. Have eaten there many times and different staff always have the same attitude. Food standard is not high for the price point, but the views make you overlook a lot!

Really enjoyed our visit here. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. It was also super exciting to be able to sit on the rocks and be so close to the waves while enjoying our lunch. Definitely no other restaurants we’ve been to has this type of experience, not even in Cape Town. Really enjoyed it and hope to visit again soon.

They have delicious food and a beautiful view. Staff extremely friendly and service absolutely great. I had the calamari, fried and chips with a garlic and butter sauce and that was so delicious. The calamari melted in your mouth which is perfect. The atmosphere is very calmly.

Great food & an amazing location, sit right next to the ocean and if you're lucky you get to see whales from your table. Blankets are also provided. I would recommend that you book to avoid disappointment as this restaurant is very busy.

Wow what a beautiful setting in Hermanus! Don’t miss this one when visiting- We had a late afternoon booking and we asked for a table outside on the rocks. We had starters snoek pate and panko crumbed prawns. Both very enjoyable. Mains was Tiger Prawns and the Seafood Potjie. The Prawns was delicious but the potjie was underwhelming.The sauce was tasteless and held no body. No fish was found in potjie, it was all cooked away. But the atmosphere and service by our waiter made up for any short falls. We enjoyed a lazy afternoon with waves splashing around us and a beautiful view-

We did not have a full meal there, just some coffee and cheesecake. However, what a setting!!! Amazing. The manager who greeted us was very welcoming and made us want to sit down and order something. Paying attention to customers is such a rare thing these days. We will be back to enjoy what looked like well presented meals. BTW the staff must be seriously fit negotiating those steps every day. Pop in if you are in the area and enjoy the short hike down to the restaurant and then up again.

Stunning view in this cute little restaurant directly built into the rocks next to the ocean and of course the whales! Keep in mind that it is only open til 4pm, dinner is only possible with a reservation. If you don't want to eat (or "only" oysters), tell the waiter and you get seated directly to the water which is really beautiful.

The ambience is soothing and it's lovely to have the crashing waves right next to you whilst you dine. A perfect location to try something new but I have to say the single serving dishes didn't reach my expectations but the platters are good. Their vegetable and vegetarian options are more oily than flavourful, I wouldn't say the price is worth the food. Other than that, as a place to experience unique location, I'd recommend visiting especially during whale season when the sun is out and the wind is calm.

Fantastic location. Inside is literary a big cave and outside you sit nearly in the ocean. Only access might be a bit challenging for some. Quite a few steps Luckily the way from the old harbour museum is bit more flat. The food (focus on seafood) is good and surprisingly fast on your table. Lunchtime is always busy. So better book in advance although the friendly staff is helpfully trying to accommodate you if possible.

Restaurant with an ocean view. One of a few restaurants that can do grilled fish without killing it with all manners of batters and sauces. Five stars for the line fish of the day. And the oysters are fresh and deliciously good.

After already eating a beautiful lunch (my next review) we walked past Bientangs Cave and felt the pull! We always have room and time for coffee and desert. So glad we did, after sitting down at one of the tables cliff side we witnessed something even the staff had to pause and watch. There was a school of mackerel and one generous comerant must have given the all bird alert, because the next seven minutes we watched a stream of comerants fly into feed. I’ll try and post video! The general consensus was there were about 25,000 birds! Didn’t see whales, but oh my this was a treat! Oh and yes the desert and coffee were worthy of praise! Lovely place and friendly staff!

We had the Cape Malay curry for good reasons ( cold and rainy) but were disappointed in the freshness of the calamari, poppadoms were not crispy and felt the prawns should have had no shells. The spiciness of the meal was very tasty.

You wouldn't even know the restaurant was there if you didn't know where to find it, hidden at the bottom of a set of stairs and on the oceans 'doorstep' its definitely worth a visit!

No prices on the menu. Beware prices on wine list are misleading as it turned out to be the price per glass and not a bottle. Spent over R1000 on lunch for 2 persons!

With tables scattered on the rocks, each seating arrangement promises a breathtaking view and a sense of serenity. While prices may lean towards the higher end, every penny is justified by the unparalleled ambiance and experience. Whether enjoying a simple cup of coffee or a glass of fine wine, the backdrop of the endless sea elevates every sip. Our pets were even welcomed with their own bowl of fresh water.

The food was okay. I've had this type of food before and there wasn't anything special or made it stand apart. This place only has a handful of tables by the ocean and if you want to sit there you have to reserve it in advance. I was eating alone and felt neglected. I had to walk around, then find my waiter and ask to order and do that again to pay for the bill. This is a place for tourists and large groups. If you don't have a reservation for an ocean table seat then it may not be worth the amount.
