Reviews of Fernkloof Nature Reserve
Beautiful Nature reserve and great trails to hike. Well maintained and will come back again. The watetfall not so great when we visited because of the dry spell in Western Cape. Great picnic spot lots of space for kids...and entry is free or make a donation.
This place is such a hidden gem. I was pleased to find a trail guide on duty at the entrance who explained the hiking routes depicted on the motorway at the start of the trails. He was friendly and ready to answer any questions about the trails or the reserve in general. The routes were clearly marked all the way and were always visible. I never felt threatened or worried that I would get lost. The views are amazing all the the way and the landscape keeps changing to keep the hike interesting. The waterfall is beautiful and not too far from the starting point.
Best hiking trails in the Overstrand! 🤩
Pet friendly!
You can go mountain biking. 🚵🏻♀️
There’s a dam as well, for when the trail gets too hot. 🏊🏻♂️
Great for a quiet walk, but the down side is the routes could be marked better from the Visitors Centre....we walked around the gardens rather than get lost on a trail that we could not finish.
Breathtakingly beautiful... So we'll kept. Was an amazing experience with stunning views all around...
Many trails to choose from... Can have a lovely picnic afterwards on the lawns - depending on Covid-19 Lockdown Restrictions
One of the best trails i walk this year and i only posted some photos
Gorgeous.. Stunning.. A nature reserve next to a city.. Go for a walk and enjoy the fauna and flora.. Very quiet and relaxing.. Picnic areas nice and clean.. See for yourself
Good for any type of hiker. You'll find easy to advance routes.
Well maintained trails in a stunning part of the world! What more can we ask for 🙂
A perfect place for a garden wedding on a summers day. Get there early and book a spot.
Amazing reserve with some fantastic views and hikes to suit all fitness levels.
We had too little time to explore all the routes but made a promise to come back as soon as possible
Lovely garden with many nature activities for little ones. Bring a small balance bike for little ones to stroll around the park. Small but fun play area for toddlers and children. Plenty of shade for a picnic. However, there are some thorns on the grass.
Lovely garden with plenty tortoises out and about.
Beautiful walking trails with spectacular views! A lovely picnic area with a lovely garden at the visitors entrance
Very beautiful views and opinions to walk
Unspoilt beautiful walking trails and gardens 😊
We been there a couple of times and last time stayed overnight in Galpin hut- great experience!
Great nature reserve. Visitor center has maps available if needed. Walking sticks also available. Toilet facilities and a tap with clean drinking water are available.
Great hikes for everyone. Beautiful views and fynbos flowers and proteas had started blooming, it was gorgeous.
Very well maintained with awesome short trails for beginners and intermediate hikers walkers and kids.
Plenty of picture opportunities
Great trail runs and day hikes
Well marked and stunning views . Walked for about 1hr30min
Awesome trails dog friendly good swimming location
The Environment super refreshing.A nice place to be in the heart of Hermanus.Beautiful flowers echoed by different species of births.
Is beautiful, clean and the paths are well maintained, we went in a group including two kiddies ages 7 and 8, they loved it. We went up to the first dam and had a picnic was really great to have family time. Yes there are toilets at beginning route yes you can swim in the dams and there is cell phone reception as well. Can't wait for next one
The best hike I have been on. Just amazing views. Plan a day trip and do the 9.5 hour hike you will not regret it. The shorter hikes are best of small kids.
Lots of lovely hiking trails. A top notch indigenous nursery is a bonus.
A must if you are a visitor to Hermanus, perfectly safe if you don't take thousands of rands of camera gear with you. Vegetation is amazing, lots of species, views of the mountains and ocean are so beautiful, visitors centre with plants is very informative. You can also have a picnic in the botanical gardens no fires but a lovely quiet place to spend the afternoon. I go monthly and spend time there. Great place if the weather is windy or its not a beach day.
We took our 2 dogs on the allowed routes and they were very excited to enjoy the walk with us. Splendid views of the ocean and the surrounding area. Take a rest on a bench along the trail. The trails are clearly marked and well maintained bridges and steps makes the journey so much easier. You start off at the reception hut (there are toilets here) where you can plan your route and get a walking stick. When you return the walking stick, take some time to study and appreciate the exhibition of flora that you came across on your walk. You will come back to finish another route... Maybe overnight in the cabin?
The abundance of bird life and accompanying chatter is wonderful...... as is the burbling of water in the streams. Baboon watchers abound as do the baboons but if you don't bother them, they'll not bother you. And so many trails to take. For the lesser trail blazers like us, there are easy walks. I will definitely return with the correct gear and explore further
Amazing little reserve with great trails and views.
A lovely place to walk in the mountains, with different paths. A few years ago it wasn't that safe, but now it is, with guards all around. When you get to some area at the top, there is a beautiful view of Hermanus.
One feels totally cut off from the world and your problems when you are up there.
Awesome nature reserve with great hiking trails.
What an amazing day out! Be prepared though. Make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes, slap on lots of sunscreen and also take loads of water. I only did half of what I planned on walking because of not having all the essentials. Oh, and also remember to take the camera :)
Beautiful., stunning. No crowds. Clean and safe. Well maintained. Stunning views. Tha trails are fantastic. Great sites from the mountains. You won't be sorry
A photographer's dream...
If you enjoy nature, picnics and a walk amongst nature, you can't find better than this.
Simply Gods creation, each colour and pigment perfectly painted.
Special little reserve. The botanical diversity is very unique. The flowers in spring is something to enjoy. Lots of beautiful hikes - from a short 20min hike to long days hikes into the mountains.
Beautiful beautiful place❤️
What a lovely day!
It is a safe environment full of natural beauty. It contains typical South African Fynbos which is the unique biome to which it belongs. There are various walkways to suit all ages and levels if fitness. There are baboons in the area which should never be confronted as they can be aggressive. Do not try to feed them. Please check the local newsletters to find out about special exhibitions etc.
An awesome experience at Fernkloof Nature Reserve! It was my first time to see and experience the natural beauty.
Thank you too to the Hermanus community and tourism for the amazing upkeep, so that not only the local residents of Hermanus can enjoy, but for us the visitors!
Well done, much appreciated!
Amazing. Just amazing. Beautiful environment and full of nature and beauty. If you're adventurous I'd recommend you give it a visit. 🗺️
Hiked the three dams. It's a well trodden path, but with a lot of loose stones and dirt on cliff side paths that go up from the lowest dam. Great scenery all the way.
I really enjoyed walking in Fernkloof Nature Reserve
Love, love, loooove it. If you haven't been, please make a plan to visit it. Many trails and picnic opportunities, as well as a restaurant and nursery. And the view!!!👏👏👏
It's absolutely beautiful here, walking along the paths around the mountains. The best part is the dam with "cola" water, naturally created by the fynbos higher up at the source.
stunning views of walker bay and hermanus. stunning views of the mountains to the north.
there were some well-placed benches where we could sit and take in the view of the ocean.
We decided to do an afternoon walk in Fernkloof Nature Reserve. It was an exilirating experience walking among beautiful flora with stunning vistas over Hermanus and the sea beyond. We saw a family of 5 klipspringer silouetted against the late afternoon sky and stopped to watch them meander along the ridge. Then we saw the sunbirds flitting between the flowering shrubs, ericas and proteacea. We ended in the gardens enjoying a walk among the large variety of plants it contains. A lovely afternoon spent in nature.
Buy the excellent hiking map for R10. In combination with the perfect signposting you can't get lost. The mountains are beautiful.
Absolutely stunning views, fabulous Fauna and Flora. Very clean and an absolute pleasure to visit.
This is an amzingly beautiful place to hike and take in nature. All routes are well signposted and easy to follow.
Lovely place, awesome hiking trails and views for days. The 3 dams must surely rank as one of the hidden gems of Hermanus.
Fernkloof Nature Reserve is one of my top 10 best hiking spots close to Cape Town. You get spectacar views of the Hemal en Arde Valley, Hermanus, Betty's Bay through to Hangklip on a clear day. There is an over night hut that is very basic but sufficient. Make sure you have a good supply of food and water and warm clothes if you are interested to over night in the hut. The su rises and sunsets are magical.
Absolutely wonderful hiking the trails. Scenery stunning. Fantastic family and trail running location.
Awesome place. Pristine nature. Great hikes and safe
Beautiful nature reserve, with well marked and maintained walking trails.
O lord my God, when I'm in awesome wonder, consider all the works Thy hands have made...
Just awesome!
Good hiking spot, make sure to take food and water as there is nothing but a restroom and information office at the start.
Beautiful. Wish we had more time to spend there. Will definitely visit again.
Awesome trails, incredible views. Bring lots of water and sunscreen on hot days.
Beautiful spot. Well looked after. Clean. Toilets very clean. Great for kids.
Nice Place and very well marked hiking trails.
Just amazing, well worth the visit for the hiking enthusiasts
Beautiful scenery. Great for a hike, picnic or swim.
Nice place for a nature walk but no one at the reception always
Fantastic
Amazing hiking trails and beautiful fynbos.
Perfect. Excellent service.
A beautiful view of Hermanus and a must do.
Best view of Hermanus and surrounding areas.
Beautiful, private nature reserve with great vegetation and beautiful views of the coast around Hermanus. The hiking trails are well signposted and are also easy to walk with sneakers. In the small visitor center you can get a card and make a voluntary donation to maintain the park.
Super great hikes!
Super nice hiking area in Hermanus. We did a very nice and easy panoramic hike and had a great view of the city.
