Let me start by saying this review is based on the fact that this Spar is located within the prestigious Gateway Shopping Mall, had it been anywhere else, I would give it a 4. However, I expect 4 and 5-star shops and experiences from everything within Gateway. So that being said, let us subsequently begin the review. My first issue was that the Spar could be considered tolerably clean, for me that should be immaculate. Many of the fresh produce and some other products are up to two days past their sell by date. That's not just a bad reflection on the image of the Spar, it's an unacceptable health issue. If you're cool with paying R30 for expired mushrooms, then this is the shop for you. The layout is fine, nothing wrong there, but the displays of the bakery, butchery etc. are so average, I feel like I was at Boxer in Durban central. The point is, this is Umhlanga, the Sandton of the coast. With all the expansion and developments/upgrades happening here right now in Umhlanga, I'm hoping the Spar in Gateway decides its high time to freshen things up. Go from average to excellence. This store is close to Checkers. Not good at marketing. People often buy products at Checkers at much higher price, particularly fresh produce. Worthwhile checking prices at both stores. Spar often better.

I'd like to thank Luingi 2IC of the deli department for the great customer experience, today I walked into the store and there were no shopping basket at the entrance and I saw Redbull that was on special I took a lot of them,while I was waiting for my order at the Deli he came and asked if the red Bulls were mine and went out of his way to get me a trolley, Thank you very much Sir I really appreciate what you did for me.🙏
