Reviews of Nikkei Japanese Peruvian
11/10 highly recommend, the 8 course meal is definitely delicious and definitely worth having even if you have the 10 course meal . Each dish is paired well with each little dish . Also great cocktails 🍸
A good expression of Japanese food. Didn't get so much if the Peruvian apart from the Pisco.
It was an awesome dinning experience with different taste for the pallet.
Absolutely loved this place...had such a phenominal time with my husband...loved our waitress Mika who was giddy, friendly and proffessional...loved her menu recomendation...the food itself was lovely, very tastey but not overwhelming...will definitely revisit this must visit restaurant!
There are 2 seatings for dinner, I chose 8:30pm as there is no restriction on time, 6:30 you need to leave by 8:30. Better make a reservation as this place is so full even though I dined mid week.
I chose the omakase set menu for 2 and added jalapeño and sashimi. 3 people shared this and still this was way too much of food. We even had to take some away. My opinion is that this menu is enough for 3 people sharing or even 4 people with 2 add on items. Surprising that they serve such large portions. Quite cheap then by Cape Town standards.
The selection of items on this menu are amazing, you get to taste so many different flavors and techniques. The combination of Japanese/Peruvian can be experienced easily through each course. Cocktails are well priced too with good attentive service. The music too keeps you going into the night.
Very well designed trendy space. This type of restaurant shows why Bree Street is known now to be the 11th coolest street in the world.
Only had their cocktails but wow were they nice! They are pricey but definitely worth it. Will have to come back again for the food.
Absolutely loved every moment. From the friendly welcome and service, to the very pleasant aesthetic and the awesome unique fine dining experience. My girl friends and I were very pleased. The food was super yummy too, I think we had like 5 courses of proper Michelin quality cusine!
Honestly, this restaurant delivered faultless dishes today and the service was impeccable! My absolute best meal was the Yellowtail Hamachi (you’ll want a second portion!). Without a shadow of doubt my new favourite restaurant in Cape Town! Even though I didn’t have a cocktail, they looked elegant and it was mesmerizing watching the skillful barmen executing amazing cocktails one after the other with passion.
From the moment my guests and I stepped through the front door, the service was exceptional. Our delightful waiter, Kiara, was attentive and the food was exquisite. I highly recommend trying the Matcha cheesecake—it's a must-have!
Had dinner with my partner and we love every single dish we had. We shared lobster, tuna ceviche, sashimi, crispy squids and wagyu ribeye…Not to forget the mochi they give you at the end of you ( mouth weathering) she really enjoyed the cocktails 🍸
Amazing in every way. We were greeted and seated by friendly staff. Tamsin did a great job at looking after us. From confirming our dietary requirements from the get go and explaining the menu with recommendations for quantity to order as they recommend a family sharing approach when ordering, to explaining each dish when it arrived. She helped us select some great dishes including the crispy squid, oxtail croquette, lobster tail skewer, salmon sushi, sesame short rib, yellowtail hamachi and chilli edamame (to name a few!). Everything was 10/10. She explained that the dishes would arrive as and when they were ready which is an art form to get right when the restaurant was pumping but surprisingly she had the order sorted so smoothly that we were continually eating, drinking and enjoying the evening with minimal to no wait time. Dishes were plated with such care and attention. Extra touches added to the experience including the complementary welcome canapé (which was adjusted to be Gluten free!) and the homemade mochi that came with the bill. We didn’t have to lift a finger as Tamsin was always on hand when we needed her. Our glasses were never empty - either with a recommended cocktail or a glass of wine from a local farm. Couldn’t fault the evening in any way! We will definitely be back :) well done Nikkei!
A very welcomed addition to Bree. It’s a fun restaurant with fun food. Staff was kind and attentive. It’s a bit noisy if you are looking for fine quite dining, but it’s perfect for a date night with loud friends who you can share dishes with.
Venues like the Nikkei always remind us just how spoilt and privileged we are in Cape Town.
The cuisine is somewhat different to other Japanese eateries, not as intense, you need to taste slower as the flavours are more subtle and take time to unfold on your taste buds.
Most memorable however was the impeccable service.
An unrefined version of Fyn/ La Colombe. Food LOOKS great (presentation and crockery) but flavours and textures are lacking refinement. The dessert and mochi were the best part but was dissapointed with the limited tea selections. I'd suggest they get a better selection of teas (seeing that both Japanese and South American people have deep appreciation for tea blends). The ambiance is a bit too dark and noisy for my liking (there was a clash with the music - would have been nice if it was just a soothing instrumental background noise). Fake plants look good at first glance but are untimately tacky. Service was good - friendly, accommodating and professional staff but this was overall a miss for me. Personally not worth the price.
The restaurant is lovely, beautifully designed and decorated and pleasantly reminded me of another Japanese restaurant I visited overseas. To be honest, i didn't LOVE the food. Many of the dishes were a little too salty for my tasting and I just expected more. Mung soup was delicious, I really enjoyed that and was excited for what was to come. Unfortunately it never really got better than the first course. The al dente rice was not my liking for the sushi although i can tell that the flavours were very refreshing, i couldn't get over the hard cooked rice. Our waiter, Gina, was very sweet, her service was excellent. Overall, it was a nice atmosphere and the mocktail was also delicious. Try the place for yourself.
Underwhelming.
The decor and vibe of the restaurant made up for underseasoned food. The robata items (two tiny portions of skewers) were served on elaborate "hot coals" grills in an attempt to wow, but unfortunately fall short and become more cumbersome than anything else when a table of 4 orders multiple items.
I get what they were going for, but it just didn't quite hit the mark. The service was very good, and the wine was nice. But that's good at a lot of places, so will be giving Nikkei a miss next time.
Loved the ambiance! Great food with unique flavours and a fantastic selection of cocktails. Excellent service from all the staff. Could possibly reduce the sushi served on the Gold Tasting Menu as we could not finish all of our food and I would have loved to try a dessert as well.
It took us 11 months before discovering Nikkei, what a pleasant surprise! Excellent food and service, we'll be back soon to especially try out more of the Peruvian dishes! They have extensive vegetarian options as well.
Caroline was the coolest waitress. The oxtail balls, tuna and yellow tail was exceptional. The "sushi" lost me a bit. The red meat was tender and flavourful. The restaurant itself is beautiful!
We had the 9 course gold Menu.
The food was good, but not very good. Overall it gad to much deep fried courses within the menu. The enjoyable lightness of the Peruvian fish cuisine with fresh acidity was not embraced enough.
The music was very loud so it was hard to communicate with the very friendly and welcoming waitress.
Hands down one of the best restaurants in Cape Town! Service is exceptional, Morgan our waiter was incredible - he explained each dish to us and was overall friendly and helpful. We tried the tasting menu for 2 and I highly recommend it, make sure you eat a lighter meal earlier in the day as portions are generous. You want to make sure you have space to take it all in :) A must try dessert is their matcha cheesecake, it was divine!!! Fives stars all around for Nikkei, it’s just WOW!
We loved everything. The wonderful service, the pisco sour, sushi, the menu, the music, the atmosphere. Not too loud. What a great evening to share with a group of friends. 🙏
We had a wonderful evening on Thursday. The food was great and particularly enjoyed the music and sax in the background. Great atmosphere, well done
The food was next level delicious - super creative and unique as well. The service stood out. My sister has food intolerances and they not only had options for her, but continuously catered around her for it. The waitress was knowledgeable, caring, and the experience overall was great - we will be back!
The meal was ok. The food was hit or miss, tempura cauliflower was inedible. We were only in town a few nights and would have prioritized elsewhere.
NEW UPDATE!!!!
So I went back to Nikkie, 6 months later and the jump was incredible!! they have ironed out all the details and I give it a solid 5/5!! its so impressive to see a place move forward in such a small amount of time, I can't even explain how much tastier the food was, I look forward to coming back again, well done!! a must visit when you are in Cape Town!

Very very cool spot, amazing vibe, unmatched decor, still new and figuring out a few things, but I can’t wait to come back again.
I can't stop going back for more. Whether we visit with family or friends, the experience remains a spoil. Sushi is fresh, wine is chilled, music creates a lazy Sunday afternoon atmosphere and service is impeccable. It certainly warrants many visits. Highly recommended
Excellent ambience! The visuals as you enter the restaurant are surreal! The way the food is served! The drinks! Everything is done so well and visually appealing. A must experience
First time and we had the set menu for 2. Some very nice flavours and great mixture of courses. The service was great: friendly, on the ball and he gave us immediate feedback from the kitchen when we disliked one dish.
Good food, good service,… but one major drawback of the evening was the music. It was SO loud that having a conversation with two felt like being at the bar in a club. We had a reservation at 18h so so need for clubbing vibes this early 😅 might have been us though. Go check it out for yourself! It’s a nice place.
We had dinner at Nikkei.
It's good value and even if there was an issue with the service (we weren't asked for our order and eventually waited 50 min to get our first dish), they managed quite well to turn it around. The dishes were maybe too fast and we ended up with 3 dishes of meat on the table.
The food is good, some of the dishes are very nice, some of them are slightly sweet but overall it's worth the price.
The main problem is how loud the place is, as it's not isolated, so you end up shouting to cover all the noise, from music to tipsy people. It's not super enjoyable because of that.
Mouth watering flavors excellent service. Waiters really know the dishes. Great attention to detail - offering you you next drink at just the right time.
Important observation for the owners. You need acoustic panels on your walls/ceiling. Its really hard to hear what your date is saying accoss the table because the acoustics are haunted by the the parallel concrete surfaces which creates an unwanted echo (you hear people say ‘the restaurant is too ‘noisy’) easy one to fix to get a 6/5 rating from me xx
Used to visit the Nairobi Nikkei/Inti regularly so checked this one out. The Cape Town equivalent is good but could learn from the Nairobi equivalent in terms of vegan and vegetarian cuisine, as there are very few options in the CT restaurant and vegan is not indicated on the menu. Probably a lot of the restaurant's target market, and a growing number, have dietary requirements so it's worth them thinking of doing better on this (also for their cocktails - no markings on vegan/non vegan). Most of the staff also were not trained on this and were for example unaware of whether the condiments were vegan.
Thought the food was ok. The presentation was amazing though.
We had a wonderful experience here. The sushi was incredible and very unique. I would highly recommend the crab and lobster rolls some of the best I've ever had. We were a little disappointed with the barbecue side, the skewers were a little bland. One of the managers spoke with us and offered to remove these from the bill and offered us a wonderful free dessert. Truly fantastic service we would definitely go back and order more sushi!
Incredible service from Zac, very knowledgeable and just an overall great experience from him. Drinks were next level and the food was even better. 10/10. Best in Cape Town
This was one of the best food experiences we've ever had.
We had the 8 course set menu, and added a sushi platter! Every bite was so flavourful and delicious.
The ambiance is warm and the staff really friendly.
It is a must on Bree Street.
Well done Nikkei team, you can be very proud!
Went on a whim tonight while here on holiday from the US and could not have been more pleased with our experience—in fact after complimenting our service we could not even believe the restaurant recently opened. Food was fresh, flavorful and thoughtfully presented - and our server Daniel could not have been more welcoming or helpful with the menu. Great atmosphere as well - festive but not too loud - and the surprise touches made it even more special. Highly recommend!
Best new spot in Cape Town! Amazing atmosphere, great food (set menu was 👌🏼👌🏼), still reasonably priced and by far the best service I received in South Africa. From the front desk to the manager; especially our server Tom was absolutely on point. 5/5! Have to come back to go through the rest of the menu!
Amazing dining experience which was enhanced by our waiter, Kye. He was extremely helpful and his suggestions were delicious. He went above and beyond to provide us with the best dining experience.
Highly recommend the tuna ceviche and the baked kingclip.
Absolutely AMAZING. We came from Canada and the service and food was probably the best we have had
Perfect spot for Saturday evening
Everything was excellent.
You have got to go.
Menu is fairly complex, luckily there was a set menu for us.
The four of us were so looking forward to this and were sorely disappointed.
The atmosphere is overwhelmingly beautiful- opulent, very Great-Gatsbyish. The crowd is hip, gay, flamboyant, beautiful and hipsterish.
The music during dinner is as loud as in a club what makes any conversation almost impossible.
The service was very attentive and exerted about our allergies and intolerances but despite all efforts almost nothing could be served without garlic or vegan at all...
One of our waiters got tipsy or otherly intoxicated during the lengths of our dining experience. The food was simply bad. Uninspired, dry, meager with a lot of "tamtam" in the presentation to obviously distract from the lack of flavour. Best things very the Margheritas and the Mochis in the end. Given the huge amount of amazing restaurants in capetown NIKKEI comes around as a show off for seeing and been seen not eating and been eaten.
Was there for 6 course lunch, extremely high standard in beautiful setting with some truly original flavors. I will come back.
Loved it. Great sushi, perfect ceviche and salmon teriyaki was 👌. Particularly, enjoyed a lot the saxophone playing live. Very nice experience
I’m looking for the 6 star option. Such a great meal and phenomenal service! A must try !!
What a great service and experience, the staff was amazing from the Hostess to our waiter Noah hope I got his name right. Definitely coming back here🙌🏽🙌🏽 The food was too good.
Such an incredible Japanese fusion fine dining experience!
the service the atmosphere whete great - the food was not 100% if you luv raw fish and adventurous then definitely its the place
Amazing food and dining experience. DJ Music on Friday evening slightly loud but great experience. 👍
Classy venue. Classy food. Classy service.
A truly amazing gastronomic experience!!Not to be missed.
hi
are your venue wheelchair friendly
It's a treat all round.
High quality and nice atmosphere
A wonderful experience
We ordered the 9-course meal, and we had pisco, I assume that we are Latin so the Peruvian flavor is very incorporated. The pisco had no taste, it lacked more alcohol and body, a good pisco you feel all the nuances of the rubber, the lemon and obviously the pisco, here it seemed like a light drink. The dishes had an excellent presentation, some lacked salt for my taste or lemon, I did not find the Peruvian flavor, the sushi did not have the salmon. I liked the meat, it was the only dish that the 4 of us enjoyed. I wouldn't return because I went for the pisco and because I miss the Peruvian flavor but I didn't get it here, it was more of a nice experience. Atmosphere, very friendly people. The price was a little high for the quality price because the place was a lot of people and it didn't feel exclusive. A lot of noise and the tables together.
The expectations were high given the price and unfortunately were not met. The sushi rice was not fully cooked, the sushi tasted nothing special and was just okay. The tea was very tasty, but the teapots were dusty (when asked, they said there had been renovations last week). The Peruvian Bonto Box tasted good, but the edamame were spicy (it's our own fault because we didn't ask if any of the dishes were spicy). The greeting from the kitchen was served together with a bonsai. The idea is good. Unfortunately, the food was placed directly on the soil of the bonsai, very unhygienic!
Overall, unfortunately far too expensive for the price.
This restaurant is incredible, their food, their attention, the music they play. The flavors of the food are stupidly delicious. If you have self-respect, then you should go to this restaurant.
The service is so good that we arrived without a reservation and they still upgraded us and treated us so well it was amazing
Very interesting mix of two different worlds, ceviche and sushi, miso, yuzu and lucuma.Speusen well presented, with table grill, open kitchen
