Reviews of Galjoen
A fantastic lunch, best oysters, the sauces were the piece de resistance. We will be back.
A sublime experience at Galjoen for dinner. The decor, food and service is exceptional. Attention to details and flavours of the dishes are very well thought out. Though full, we left wanting more. Thank you for a wonderful evening!!!
If you're seeking an extraordinary culinary experience, look no further than Galjoen.
Nestled in the heart of the city, this restaurant sets itself apart by offering locally sustainable seafood while delivering a dining experience that is nothing short of incredible.
Food was amazing! Really worth it. Was a bit noisy and difficult to hear waiter and have easy conversation
As a high-end, set menu, five course experience, Galjoen is almost great. They are at their absolute best with their seafood plates, which are clear, confident in the quality and the freshness of their ingredients and very creative. They are at their worst away from the ocean. We had a "cheese plate" where they had taken a perfectly nice local artisanal cheese (you could taste it in the grated garnish) and processed it into something vastly inferior - almost industrial. Their reservation policy, however, left the worst taste in our mouth. We reserved as a party of six and made the required deposit. A few hours before we arrived, two of our party dropped out due to illness. We promptly advised the restaurant of the change assuring them that four of us were still coming. When we arrived, however, we were ushered to a table a table set for 6,. and informed the restaurant would retain 800 R for the two cancellations. We found that very unfair and their explanation that they had budgeted the food for six hard to accept. After all, they were going to serve the same menu the next night and presumably could use at least some of the ingredients they had purchased then - their reservation policy seemed neither gracious or necessary. On a final note, the art at the restaurant is beautiful. Liz Van Den Berg's Gyotaku prints of marine life are exquisite!
I love the idea of Galjoen and I'm so glad that a sustainable fish restaurant has opened! The food was really good! Most dishes were amazing, here and there, there are still some dishes that do not taste fully balanced and I didnt finish them. Galjoen is getting there and soon they will be one of the best! I'm rooting for you!
This was an absolutely amazing experience for a person who isn't very seafood orientated I really enjoyed this lunch. The menu is seafood but it's not so on your face with seafood flavours and textures, the whole menu has a balance to it which leads you from a delicate starter to a robust main.
Each single dish was unique and can hold their own against any dish it follows or comes before it.
The Staff were top class and the chef always moved around the room explaining their dishes and the concept of the restaurant.
I would definitely go back again, especially for that sushi dish I still have flashbacks of that Octopus Marmite yes ladies and gentlemen Octopus Marmite.
If they can bottle that I will buy the first bottle.
Thank Galjoen truly an amazing restaurant and experience.
Excellent dining. Highly recommended.
Perhaps my expectations were too high from all the hype around newly opened Galjoen, but I found the set menu somewhat over-engineered with “clever” little whimsical plays on this or that. The oyster and tuna sashimi starters were amazing, then progressively every dish got drenched in more and more sauce! Ultimately I thought there were too many dishes and slightly too much food. Also, at over a thousand Rand per head with drinks, I’d expect the ambience and service to be more in line with elegant fine dining, which wasn’t really the case. Did we have a good night out with great food? Absolutely.
It was a good lunch menu which i really enjoyed but it was not extraordinary good. i would definable recommend this place but not if you are in Cape Town for only 3 days. If you are here for longer, it‘s something you should try. Price-quality ratio was very good.
We had a lovely evening. I like the fact that they source sustainable. We were a bit underwhelmed by the menue, probably because we had high expectations and there are so many outstanding restaurants around that you become very spoiled.
Excellent place for affordable fine dining in Cape Town
Excellent food and the oysters are out of this world. I will definitely be back! Extremely friendly chefs and staff.
Definitely worth the visit, it was an exquisite evening with amazing food
Excellent
Excellent restaurant with regional products. We really liked extremely well thought-out courses such as the rock pool with abalone and seaweed. The oysters were the best we have ever eaten. Big praise.
10 out of 10. Unbeatable service, delicious food and excellent product. The atmosphere is very cozy and the attention to detail is seen in the design of dishes and restaurant.
Fixed menu at lunchtime. Freshness and great creativity!
Don't miss the Belly of the Beast. Both must be reserved!
