Reviews of Heart of Cape Town Museum
The best museum I have been to so far in cape town. Is definetly a must visit. The tour ist very interesting, the whole topic is very important and fascinating. The way of presenting it to the visitor with the dolls, the original operation rooms and materials also as the newspaper articles of these days let you dive into 1967. I can really reccommend it. 👍
This was phenomenal! I LOVED IT!!
Thanks to tour guides Len and Cindy, who were extremely friendly and helpful, with knowledge coming out of their ears. It is evident that they enjoy their work thoroughly and spend personal time searching for more tidbits on the infamous Dr Barnard and his crew. They personally met him and have spoken to several nurses who actually assisted in the operation itself. The amount of information and knowledge they posses is mesmerising. I love asking questions and I surely tested their memory which was mind blowing. They are incredible! Definitely take the tour. It’s worth more than you’re paying!
Thanks guys!
Absolutely incredible, interesting and comprehensive museum. Extensively display of newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, life size mock-ups of scenes in the theatre rooms as well as a film about Chris Barnard's life.
Worthwhile to visit, for all age categories. Various prices for South Africans and foreigners, as well as student and pensioner prices.
Book in advance, if possible and allow for approximately 2 hour's minimum to view everything.
Great museum, the guide was really engaging and a transplant recipient. A lot to read on the walls and the ability to visit the operating rooms were history was made. Possibly a bit too much about Barnard private life, might be better to focus on his work.
The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the events that lead to the 1st human heart transplant. It is done tastefully, and both the donor and recipient are humanized and given so much respect and dignity in how their respective display are depicted.
Really enjoyed this experience.
Right amount of input from super knowledgeable guide, video and time to read our own information.
Also team couldn't have been more helpful in terms of assistance for one of our party who had mobility issues.
Great experience, highly recommended
That's a wonderful place to visit, my boss used to go for holidays and i would really like to visit one day
The guided tour was informative and special and allows time for walking around afterwards. I'd recommend it for anyone that has a interest in medicine and its history.
Thank you Cindy for the tour and the wonderful stories and information.
You kept the kids attention throughout the tour.
Really well done and set up from beginning to the end with not one moment being bored.
Keep up the excellent work.
Fascinating tour. Visit the operating theatres where the world’s first human heart transplant was performed. Lots to see in this museum.
A must see adventure. Its like getting into a time machine. Would go back every time I visit Cape Town
I absolutely LOVED it!! The tour was amazing and it was wonderful learning about the journey the people involved with these transplants went through. The operating theatre as well as the study and Denise's room with the dresses, is absolutely georgous! The effort put into the whole museum is magnificent. I would definitely recommend it! It is an absolute must see for everyone.
It was very educational, I really enjoyed being there, it was very real to see the dolls (surgeons), they were very realistic and I love it!
Leonardo from English Plus Academy of Cape Town
Great and engaging guide. Excellent operating theater displays. The museum advertises round trip transportation free of charge but I wasn't able to get a pick up for my same day reservation although they did provide a ride back.
Excellent tour and we’ll worth the visit. Hugely informative and got to see the actual theatre where the worlds first heart transplant took place. Would highly recommend!
The location is a little bit out of town but we hired a taxi which made the experience a little more costly. The tour was extremley interesting and lasted two hours. The lady was very knowledgable and very passionate about CB and his work. This made it very entertaining even if you are not from a medical background, which we weren't.
What a great experience to witness an iconic figure in our Health Sciences in South Africa. My first experience was with my high school.
We had a Life Science research project, so my teacher decided to take us there. At the venue you'll find props of Dr Bernard. There are tour guides which are excellent in their jobs.
They actually assisted us with our research project during that time. In order to visit the museum, you need to make bookings online or at the venue itself.
despite me not showing up at a time of one of the tours, the lovely woman who worked there volunteered to show me around a little before closing. normally, although not obvious from the leaflets, you must visit at one of the tour times - it is not the norm to just show up and browse. the location is a bit eery but a great musuem. informative experience.
Recommend doing the full 2 hour tour. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Great to understand our medical history a little bit better.
An incredible experience. Discovering what and how made South Africa and Christiaan Barnard the world leaders in heart transplant surgery. A very informative tour hosted by Trace who's knowledge on the history of transplant surgery was staggering as well as (at times) humorous. I remember seeing the breaking news when I was a child in 1967 but to see the place where it all happened was amazing.
One of the most fascinating and informative museums. Love the way they have laid out the two surgery rooms as they were on that memorable day. Highly recommended.
A fascinating insight into Chris Barnard's passion and life. It's quite an emotional visit and the guide, Trace, made it very interesting and enjoyable. Well worth a visit.
Wish Hamilton Naki's story was told with more detail!
A cool way to tell the story of Cape Town's big place in medical history. The staff are passionate and the museum moving.
What a great place to visit amazing for family outings or just a beautiful tour of the museum my sister and I had a blast we learn something everyday
It’s a good place, very interesting. I recommend.
What a great Museum! Definitely worth taking the time and Family to go and learn about this amazing moment in history!
I found it very informative and interesting, giving me knowledge regarding the players involved in the first successful open heart surgery
Fascinating! Worth every penny. If you're ever in Capetown make sure you visit. It costs just ZAR 200
Tour guide was extraordinary. A story worth hearing. Pity the surrounding hospital is on such a sad state
Informative tour, very interesting museum
Great tour given by Allan. Very informative and insightful.
Very impressive tour of the world’s first heart transplant
Really was blown away but what was demonstrated and explained.... the tour guide was out of this world.
Awesome.. Very well maintained and preserved the place which gave birth to the heart transplantation
The tour is well worth the fee charged, a wonderful learning experience.
Amazing ... It felt like I was there for the actual first heart transplant
Place you wanna be... Really amazing
As a English plus academy student, ❤️

History to be proud of.
It was fine
Impressive
Interesting place
A monument
Truly an enriching experience. It's very organized. There are specific times for visits, which are guided. When I went, a very friendly and attentive lady told the whole story of the first transplant, with interesting details. He knew exactly what he was talking about, both from a medical technical point of view and from a historical point of view.
The rooms with the montages as if the surgery were taking place are realistic and show what the procedure was like at that time. There are also parts of the patient's medical records on display, which is really cool to see, especially for those in the healthcare field. I really liked.
Incredible and very educational experience. I was enchanted by the story of Christian Barnard! Great place for cardiology students and beyond.
A very interesting journey into the past of medicine. It's unbelievable what this Christian Barnard has achieved. In my opinion a must if you are in Cape Town.
Entry R350 for foreigners. The museum is interesting, but the price is high.
Expectations exceeded! Here you can experience medical history. Definitely take the tour, the employees are passionate about it and really let you feel the story. We were moved and inspired. Absolutely recommended!
The Heart of Cape Town Museum is extremely interesting. Also for those visitors who do not come from the medical field. The entrance fee is a little high (cheaper for South Africans), but you get a lot for it. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours. And on this you can see unique documents, lots of photos and a well-made video. A tour guide will also tell you everything important. The many re-enacted scenes with life-size figures are particularly beautifully done. However, there is also a disadvantage for those who speak English poorly or not at all. Because everything is in English. Another note that should be emphasized is that you can park your car for free directly at the entrance to the museum.
Amazing!
Mandatory program for everyone interested in surgery
Excellent museum, if you work in health you will enjoy it very much. It is possible to recreate the functioning of the time very well and from the details, you can see that it has been created by health personnel. You can see details of the medical records and everything that happened.
Felt the breath of medical history! Great leadership!
A very enjoyable experience
I recommend it
Tracy our guide did a really good job. she make you live that era with her great way of story telling.
A "must" visit when in Cape Town. Very interesting and very nice guidance. 5 stars.!!
Great museum with characters and history of heart transplant. 20 years before Poland.
