Reviews of Jan Smuts House Museum
Great day out with the kids, safe open and friendly. We walked the 2.3km trial with great elevated views of Irene and Centurion. The restaurant features liquor license, great steak and burger & chips. Have a English Scone, jam and cream with tea under the trees. Jungle gym and jumping castle.
You can also visit the Jan Christian Smuts House museum or have a picnic on the grounds.
Extra tips: Dog friendly. If you want to explore the area on bikes or motorcycles park your vehicle safely inside the grounds (R10 per vehicle) and have a sundowner afterwards at restaurant.
Such a lovely hidden gem for those with craving for history. The Smuts House is nestled in a forest - more like a park really - with lots of history to learn about General Smuts and his family. Ouma's Tea Garden offers some snacks and refreshments for the weary visitors.
We only go here to walk with our dogs...and it is amazing!! There are various trails which is well marked with white paint markers. The walk next to the stream is breathtaking!
R40 entrance fee lets you take yourself around the museum, some really interesting things to see like the broken knitting needles used by their children to dig out marrow. Will keep you busy a good 2 hours if you take the time to read all of the information cards. Creaky floors... See for yourself.
What a nice place just to escape the buzz of the city and a nice place to take your dog for a 2.4 km or 5 km walk and have a nice snack after that.
A great place to have all meals under lovely shady trees and bring your dogs along don't forget the kids, very safe area for all to run around, and learn more about Jan Smuts
Great vibe. Quiet. Wonderful for dog walks. Good food.
Fantastic place for a breakfast! Best service i town!!
What a brilliant man Jan Smuts was. And such a spiritual piece of land. The ancient forest and hiking trail. The resturant a real gem and its dog friendly with a doggie menu
The setting wat peaceful in the outdoors. The entrance fee is not so much but there is not much to do. We didn't visit the Smuts house, was not sure if it was opened or not because we stood at the door but nobody helped us.
The food is good as well the service.
Overall it was a good first experience.
Great venue for dog walks
Loved every moment of my visit. From the museum itself to the tea garden and walking trail. I absolutely love that you are allowed to take your dog with you. On a leash of cause. I will definitely visit again.
It was a great experience. Just a pity that all the gardens isn't being well kept and that all the small signage note is not visible anymore. When i am there, i always imagine how it must've looked like back then . seems to be safe as well.
Museum was superb, educational and displays well kept, but lasagne ordered at the restaurant was cold with warm chips (strange combination, as I was thinking only salads go with lasanges). Strawberry milkshake was chilled and good.
Amazing for hiking and outdoor fun with the whole family.
Excellent 10 km trail run, the first 5km out in the open over the koppie and the second 5 along the river through the woods. Very friendly crew. Afterwards we had a lovely breakfast at the tea garden with great homemade ginger beer. Will definitely be back
Excellent platters for our function. Just a pity the Museum room was so hot... Understandable with no electricity... Great day was had by all.
Coffee garden for those so inclined, historical building if you want to know more about Smuts, weekly Saturday market in the mornings; I like to come here for the walking trails through the forest and over the hill with my dogs. They love it and it's a beautiful quiet little spot not far from civilisation to come unwind and enjoy some fresh air and get some exercise in a fairly safe environment.
This is by far the nicest close to home hike there is! Most sundays you will find myself and my partner, with our two sausage dogs doing a nice hike up to the top of the koppie. The hike is not tough at all and is dog friendly!
The management keeps the place in really good condition and if you go there on a Saturday when the market is on then it's a really fantastic place to go out for the morning. You can walk around, get a drink and some food maybe buy some little things. A great place to take the whole family.
History interesting but the lack of investment shows. It's become rundown and the trustees need to see how it's done overseas. The walks, which Smuts so enjoyed, need a complete overhaul, and the invasive species removed. Where's the craft market and good food to get the crowds in? It could be so much more interesting, fun and self-funding.
It's an amazing experience going there, the atmosphere is always nice and the trail routes are beautiful to walk. The quietness is wonderful as well as all the scenary and then you can also go through the museum to see quite a bit of our history.
Food and service has always been great in the many years that I have been frequenting Ouna Issie's Tea Garedn. Taking your furry child is also a bonus. A refreshing time out to just relax. The Place of Quiet offers you the opportunity to just be stil and reflect on whatever may be on your mind. For the more active, the 2.3 km Oubaas Trail that takes you to the top where the monument is, is well worth the walk with beautiful views. I can strongly recommend as a nice morning or day out.
What a lovely experience, a museum with so much history and facts about Jan Smuts but also his wife Issie. She was such a powerful lady surviving the Anglo Boer war, WW1,WW2,Spanish Flu and the Great Deppression.
The Ouma Issie tea garden is great.
A special and peaceful heritage site. The exhibition is well taken care of. The walk up to Smuts Hill should be done as a group. There is a good place for breakfast and coffee.
Very cool family outing, you can sit down for some home cooked food and some home made ginger beer at Tannie Issie's restaurant and then go for a hike along Jan Smut's hiking trail
Jan Smut's car and a couple of canons + his house makes for an interesting visit too.
Beautiful setting. Very well maintained. We loved it. To have a picnic there is amazing.
Had a simple, but healthy meal under the glorious shade of the trees.... The House was not open, so we wandered around with the dogs, using the relics to transport us back to a past age.
Lovely outdoors experience
Tour guide was fabulous, the short hike up to the obelisk was refreshing. Beats sitting on a smart phone.
History is my passion. I just love visiting thos old historic house and the ways that our people lived in those days. A must see for all. Also make sure that you visit the old market hosted on the grounds every last saturday of the month, now running for 20years.
Basset walk was fun😊
Went to Ouma Issie's tea garden, very good food and lovely staff
Stunning venue for a Sunday lunch or just a Saturday afternoon brunch it's truly a magnificent place with lots of history to be seen everywhere
