Reviews of Elgin Railway Market
Perfectly crafted, beautifully packaged, and gorgeously garnished! L-Gin craft gin, made in Elgin, South Africa, using locally grown fruit, is a refreshing summer drink. Find them in the food court at the Elgin Railway Market.
Cashless market. Pleasant country style market with organic fruit and veg stall. Plenty of foods to choose from. Arts and crafts, jewelry, carpets, decor. Live music. Very viby. Did I mention food?
Loved this market. The building itself is a steam punk style creation which would not be out of place in Gotham city, fascinating to wander around and watch the workings of the place. The selection of food stalls and craft shops is fabulous, there really is something for all tastes. Great children's playground and book bus outside. Really cool vibe. The Poké bowl I had was outstanding.
Out of this world. Quality, variety and lots of atmosphere. A must visit.
Awesome vibe and food. Live music as well. Stunning little shops.
Good coffee, great food, live music, all ages, just the perfect spot.
Really special spot to stop at on any road trip.... Or just to go there for the place it's self.
The steam punk vibe is tangible....with the oversized propeller fans and giant steam radiators....and the Wrought iron cut out railings and balustrades are fantastical.
Food was awesome too.
Just after we got our food the train arrived bringing another 300 people.... Very glad we got our food when we did. The potential for crowding is there lol.... But it wasn't our issue. And lunch time was over anyway.
We will be back.... With friends.
Update:29/10
Lovely Sunday morning for Brunch.
Not as busy as our previous visit.
Average meal R120-R150/meal- so on the expensive side in my opinion, as little variety for kids... unless they eat pizza.
Spent a good hour with the kids outside in the play area.
Super cool use if the Silo - with all the climbing nets.
Nice place for food from various countries
Had a wonderful time here, they have about 5 different sitting spots plus, a kiddies play ground plus animal or dog area(it is also animal friendly inside). The atmosphere is cool, there’s a clothing and arts market on the first floor👌🏽. They had live music, huge heaters and fans for the cold days and warm days. The food was delicious, desserts also mouthwatering. It was an all round great experience. There’s also a train that goes to Cape Town and apparently there’s also a market going on inside. Place is great for small and larger groups, families and or just couples.
Great venue to visit, amazing building with a wide variety of food stalls and shops to be explored. There is a bar and lots of seating available. Outdoor play area for the kids and you can watch the steam train come past.
Would recommend this place to everyone who has an appetite for various delicious dishes, on tap beer. Live music and a warm felt atmosphere, making one to return on a regular basis
Nice venue with plenty of merchandise on display and aome great food kiosks to choose from. The ceiling fans and the meganism turning the huge plane propeller fans was awesome. The huge heaters as well. Love the place!
A great experience at the market but especially for the Ceres Train that took us there.. Keith on the train was fantastic.. told us exactly where to go at the market, what the best food options are and what's great for the kids... the food, drinks and general upkeep of the market and facilities are really good. Overall a fun day out for the entire family.
1st time visit. Really enjoyed the lovely atmosphere, beautiful architecture, upmarket shops and excellent food. Plenty gluten free options like the poke bowls and nachos. And great live music.
Absolutely amazing. What a huge variety of excellent food...
So much different interesting shops to buy from.
Outside a put put and climbing wall for the youngsters..
Great vibe especially when the train arrives from Cape Town
A must visit
Went there for the first time. Awesome place. Had my sister's grandson (6yrs old)with us. He had a blast. One man band Kruynouw End entertained us with Awesome music. Quite talented. The food is great and reasonably priced. Salt and Sea fish and calamari platter was very well prepared.
One of a kind market and by far our favourite.
What has been created and the architecture of the whole building is amazing, look at the finest details from the nuts and bolts to the massive overhead fans.
Great food and drinks choices available at better than your average market prices.
Plenty of seating available over 3 levels of the building while still been part of the action.
The fresh fruit and veg is a must as well as the deli and the cake and sweet treat selections.
It's a place to enjoy with family and friends of even alone where you are able to join a group on the long tables.
Worth the visit and will be returning again soon.
Certainly! Here’s a review you can use:
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the Elgin Railway, and I must commend the entire staff for their exceptional service and hospitality. From the moment we boarded, we were greeted with warm smiles and a welcoming atmosphere.
Special recognition must go to Shaun and Derrick, whose dedication and attentiveness truly made our journey memorable. Shaun’s friendly demeanor and willingness to go the extra mile ensured that all our needs were met with efficiency and grace. Derrick’s expert knowledge and engaging stories added an enriching dimension to our trip, making it both enjoyable and informative.
The Elgin Railway team has created a remarkable experience that combines the charm of a bygone era with modern comfort and service. I wholeheartedly recommend this journey to anyone looking for a unique and delightful travel experience.
Thank you, Elgin Railway, for an unforgettable day out. We look forward to riding with you again!

I loved the atmosphere and food offerings. Lovely place for our 2 hour stop off the steam train.
a good spot for visiting on weekend. there were variety of foods and shops. enjoyed their live music and the atmosphere there.
Great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. There are so many stalls and a wide variety of food cuisine. Really is something for everyone and the actual building is almost an attraction on its own.
Fantastic market with a great selection of gourmet food stalls. The market is beautiful with a steam punk theme. There was live music and a very relaxed yet festive atmosphere. Well worth a visit.
After a scenic Steam Train/coach trip from Cape Town to Elgin, we were introduced to this vibrant market cum eatery. It was a cold Autumn midday when we arrived and as we entered the place we were welcomed by a lovely warm atmosphere genenerated by wood fired heaters placed at strategic positions in this very large building which I believe used to be a pack shed for the export of Apples. The place was vibrant with lots of people dressed against the cold Autumn weather that was presented for the day. Before settling into the this vibrant environment, one tended to be overawed. Soon, however, one was swallowed up in the overall enjoyment of the vibe. Lots of stalls where unusual goods were on display, interspersed with lots of eateries catering for a wide variety of tastes. Had a Pizza which was well made. The stallholders were nice and chatty and overall a lovely experience before boarding the Steam train back to Cape Town.
Ideal for family and friends.
This mall's really beautiful and has a wide variety of food stalls and I would definitely recommend it; they cater for everyone. They have pizza, burgers, seafood, sushi, Thai food, Indian food and much more. The fudge was absolutely amazing and I would highly recommend it.
We ordered from the pizza, burger and place and enjoyed it very much. They also have a nice coffee area with hot drinks and fresh baked bread.
They have a safe play area for kids and a wall climbing section as well.
The market also stock clothes, accessories and trinkets.
Please do visit. I have been visiting this mall with my biker buddies many times.
So much amazing and deliciousness to choose from. There is gin, beer and wine to choose from. Beautiful architecture, live music, stuff for the kids. Perfect way to unwind on a Saturday.
Elgin railway market has been on my bucket list, and being from Cape Town I can honestly say this is the best market I have ever been to. Live music, food stalls etc etc, but with a cool architectural twist. Great experience
Large open area well ventilated indoor food market. Lots of very yummy options Inc Sushi, burgers, Greek, Italian wine gin etc etc. Live music and lots of fun. 5 minutes from the N2 highway. Don't miss out, bring tune while family.
We enjoyed the live entertainment and variety of food stalls. A must if you are in the area.
Pretty much the same as any food market in Cape Town with the exception of some local "regional" stalls from the Overberg area.
Wide selection of food, drinks & sweet streats that can be enjoyed while being entertained my live music.
The is also a kids play area outside which is a nice touch especially if you have had little ones cooped up in a vehicle or train for a few hours
You are able to catch a steam train from Cape Town station and spend lunch time there before travelling back to the city by train.
The lunch rush can be quite overwhelming with orders taking up to 20 minutes to be prepared.
What fantastic design. A unique experience. Had a great lunch. Will need to come back again to try other yummy foods.
What a lovely experience.Busy with people visiting from all over.Good food, interesting stalls and even background music.Worth visiting.
Stunning market! We were blown away by amazing food there
Fantastic food! So many options. Real good experience
Fun place with lots of food. Cater for every taste in small stalls. Live music. BIG fires. Vlean save place to spend time with friends and family. Train runs from Cape town to Elgin and back.
The steampunk building interior is incredibly impressive. Food stalls and shops are pretty good but nothing amazing. Worth it for a decent lunch with a vibe.
Very nice market packed with interesting foods and beautiful crafts. Not a big variety for small kids in terms of entertainment, but there is a park as well as a little put put range. The food seems expensive, but not more than most Capetown Markets nowadays and one understands that it is expensive to produce quality and exotic goods. Ample parking. Partially accessible for handicaps, but a lot of the stalls are up a flight of stairs, which is not accessible with a wheelchair. Pets are allowed outside by the playarea and outside seating, but not inside the building where the market is hosted. Service dogs are allowed. If you are looking for unique arts and collectibles and decor, this is the place to get it. If you are looking for a fleamarket with bargains, definitely not.
Great place for wet winter days
Awesome experience and the food & drinks were delicious! Very family friendly and they have activities/play area to keep the kids busy
A place with a lovely sociable atmosphere. A place to come together and enjoy the company, the music, the vendor stalls and all the delicious food that is available.
Lots of tasty options (including halaal)! Poke bowls were fresh and delicious, Petra palace always a winner, the mozzarella sticks a must try!! Definitely recommend a stop when on way to or from CT. PS: website said they were closed, but we took a try and they were open (thurs 22 dec)
What a great experience and amazingly beautiful venue. Bought the most fantastic baked goodies at Little Miracles bakery. Actually went back 3 times to top up on all tasted to share with the family.
Really beautiful market. Good food. You can see a lot of work has gone into making this a great place.
Firdt time here for me and really blown away by this particular venue - so much planning and detail went into this - astonishing! See the photos and judge for yourself! If you have never been here before, do yourself the favour and take the drive there!
This is one of the best markets that I have visited in a long time good food good wine and lots of shops to browse through too find something nice plenty parking space and also lots of things for the children to do and they are open Sat and Sundays and Wed to Friday in the evening.I will definitely go visit them again great place for young and old
Surprised by the quality of the food and variety,do anticipate a wait it does get busy and vendors make order by order so you could wait a little longer ,however we’ll enjoyed
Great indoor market tucked away in the heart of Elgin right next to the railway line, which is the destination for the steam train trip from Cape Town. The market is spacious, with loads of seating and has live music to enjoy along with the many great foods and drinks on offer. A variety of crafts, jewellery, clothes, etc. on sale complete the full market experience.
Wow the place is vibrant. I was quite surprised with the amount of informal trade, there's something for everyone. Loved the variety of food choices. Set in the background of mountain ranges, it's simply a stunning place to visit with family and friends. Of course theres a huge selection of fine wines...what's not to love
Lovely indoor market - not too many repetitive food stalls, very interesting products to purchase. I didn't explore upstairs much as I had a stroller. It wasn't too overcrowded when I went even though it was during school holidays. Ample seating area inside with live music. The area is kept clean by the market personnel. Will definitely be returning, hopefully on the train!
What a beautiful place! The building is absolutely awe inspiring and the food / drink options are great. This really is worth the drive out to Elgin. There is a steam train that travels from Cape Town to the market - definitely something worth trying.
Another halaal food place, schwarma food. The curry pot that used to here seems to have changed to the curry hut. Butter chicken not the same.
Great venue, great music, took the steam train this time.
My friend from Bangladesh joined me,,,what an amazing atmosphere,,,lovely relaxing music while u browse around or just having something to eat,,amazing set up,,,
Unique market with a variety of stalls mostly serving drinks and food. Great place to have a bite and maybe do some shopping. Loads of seating areas
Brilliant market. Large variety of interesting stalls, food and entertainment for the kids. Good vibes, live music, L-Gin cocktails are a winner and really enjoyed the calamari. Would certainly recommend a visit.
We loved it! Took a day trip to Grabouw and decided to stop there for lunch. So glad we did. Pizza and craft beer, waffles, ice cream fudge... The list goes on... all very good quality, from different stalls and some live music to top it of. See you soon..
What a nice trip out to Elgin and great foid and even better music...really loved the relaxed atmosphere that you get in the big barn with the gorgeous fans...just love it!
Best market I've been too. Fantastic range of friendly local people, foods, crafts, clothing and trinkets. The awesome steam punk inspired styling of the market, makes it a perfect destination when visited via the Ceres Railway Company's steam engine tour.
Took the Elgin Rail steam train from Cape Town to Elgin which stops at the Market - the trip alone is a wonderful experience. The Market is a beutifully designed interior and has a wide variety of foods to enjoy - from burgers, pizzas (delicious!), shawarmas (phenomenal!), lamb dishes, pooitjies and chicken dishes.... to name just a few. A bar with a rage of locally produced beers a d of course therir own 'L-gin' with a variety of flavours is a must. Sweets, cakes, biltong... le list goes on! You'll have to see it personally to get it all in ..
What a hidden gem, great food and great atmosphere. I had one of the best pizzas ever, look at the options, the "White Pizzas" are phenomenal.
The Market is great for the whole family, lots of food stalls to pick from and lots for the kids to do, Climbing, kids play are, slides. The best way to get here is by the Ceres Railway Company Steam Train. Otherwise driving in is also good but not as much fun. Overall a wonderful clean and safe market. Be prepared to spend half the day doing this experience but it’s worth it.
Fantastic relaxing atmosphere. Beautiful tranquil environment with a good variety of food beverages and cosy stores.
We had a wonderful lunch and decided to get pancakes fir desert at the bazaar. Very dissapointing experience. Cold pre-made pancake for R15, expensive, cold and greasy was an aweful pancake. Wanted a strawberry and cream one and was told no fresh fruit or cream😞
Various stalls to cater for all taste buds. The food is great, the coffee even better. There is a hot shower for cyclists. The first time I see this. Dedicated motorcycle parking. Climbing wall. The inside is definitely a must see; huge fans decorate the place.
An hidden gem indeed.
Absolutely great atmosphere with unique shops and takeaways all around.
Time well spent. Loads to see and do . Excellent selection of Food vendors.
This is truly a hidden gem worth all the travelling to discover. Nestled in the beautiful Elgin wine Valley, the drive alone is a treat to the eye for any adventurous or not so adventurous soul. Along the way are lovely rolling hills filled with nature's finest and perhaps some input from mankind over years of hard work tilling the earth into orchards, vineyards and cattle farms. Once we found the railway station turned railway market, our appetites were definitely whet and we were ready to try a few different dishes from all around the world. We had a little bit of traditional Austrian fast food, then some Afrikaans mains and some Belgian chocolate for desert with some coffee to go. We also managed to buy a few thins from a couple of the traders who are mostly craftsmen making their own wares. The interior has been decorated in such a breathtaking way that one needs to see it in order to appreciate it's beauty.
A must go!!
Best food and life music, have fun with friends. Take the Elgin Railway from capetown, its fabulous!!!!!
Awesome vibe especially if want to do a market out of the city centre, I added a few pics check it out .. but the food and the entertainment was very lively
Little bit of everything, amazing food and great area for the kids as well. Arriving by train a treat
On Saturday, by some miracle we heard about a train station where we could have lunch on our travel to Cape Town- so glad we stopped here! Friendly traders at every stand! And a gorgeously ornate train station. The music by Wren Hinds was just spot on classy and made the whole experience 10 times better! Thank you thank you! We will be back !
Love this place. Just the place to be on a lazy Sunday. Outing for the whole family. Nice food and live music to listen to. Bought my mother a handbag for Mothers day🥰
Lovely experience, a must if you have never been here before. Cute little trinkets to be found...like a little shopping adventure and some really good food - there is a lot to choose from food wise. They had a band playing, which created a lovely festive ambiance. I'm glad I experienced it.
Absolute treat! Great food, great vibe!
What a gem. Food stalls, good wine. Fantastic train trip from Cape Town to Elgin.
I fell in love with the design of the building! The exterior and interior designs are mesmerizing! The prices are good as well as the food. My favorite would be the gin stall! Friendly people and great quality gin!
Unfortunately, all the stores did not work. We were here on Wednesday. A place for recreation and entertainment for children is convenient and interesting. Everything is done in a great style. We will come back on the weekend to see and appreciate everything, At the time when everything will work.
Great market, play area is fun. Lots of food
A strange place.
An old train station that has become a complex of restaurants and shops for clothes, textiles and other miscellaneous items.
The first store on the right, the seller there, is a sweetheart and she has clothes. beautiful
Nice market in a historic building. The steam locomotives stop here on weekends and allow their guests to linger. The market offers all kinds of nice things and food from all over the world. As Germans, we were particularly impressed by the “Schnitzelpeter” (All About Schnitzel). Perfect schnitzel better than in many German restaurants. A real Viennese is served here. We also really liked the GIN offer. Very unusual and decoratively served.
Former train station or carriage hall. Very lovingly and stylishly prepared with countless details carefully considered. On 3 floors, a variety of shops, craftsmen, food and drink, plus live music, outside on the weekends there's a steam train!
Fantastic chill place, love the vibe and food is amazing! The live music does the trick for sure!
Best Mark ever!! Largest variety of foods and very interesting exhibits. You deserve your Best of Capetown Best Market award for the 2nd time in a row🏆🏆👏👏!
It's very nice there. Such a big heater that warms the entire market on a cold day. Really something special
Lovely stalls.
Enjoyed the food and variety.
Nice outdoor play area for kids.
Highlight- arrival of the steam train
Very well organized food market, with few stalls of clothing, books, veldskoenne, furniture and a few other items... Its all under cover so weather is no problem... There is a live band and lots of parking...people are friendly and welcoming...the area around especially the wind farms are beautiful...
Great venue, awesome food and amazing people. Stunning clothes and jewelery. Just beautiful!!
Not bad. We went to route 44 as well which we thought was better.
