Reviews of Birkenhead House
The most wonderful place you will stay in the western cape. Great attention to detail and thinking about the little things. Also some of the best views to watch the whales in Hermanus.
this place does not compare to any place you have stayed before. we were just there for part of our honeymoon and it was the most incredible experience. shane, craig and the entire team are absolutely unmatched. we’re already looking to plan our next trip!
Wow. What an amazing lunch. The location and view is one of a kind. Ashley, our waiter, was one of the best waiters I've experienced as well - most definitely contributed to the 5 starts. Food was delicate and delicious. Thank you for hosting us. Compliments all round.
Great place to be!
We saw whales from the terrace and loved the room and kindness.
Minus 1 star for the spa… our manicure and pedicure was not really to the standard
stayed here for a 3rd time in Feb 2022!
We will probably come back.
One of my favorite hotels. Great food, great service :)
They are upgraded us because we are 'loyal' customers, which was greatly appreciated.
Unbelievable service... From the moment you stop the car at the entrance you Are overwhelmed by the level of excellence.. Whether it's the friendly helpful staff... Breathtaking views... And a feeling of luxury!! The icing is the VEGAN menu... The chef went above and beyond.. Nothing beats this... We will be back. Thank you @birkenheadhouse.. You are amazing and well deservant of your 5 star rating.
Wow what a great treat. A real hidden gem in hermanua. You have to try Chef Oliver's 5 stars prepared food...ask for his d3ath by chocolate dessert, not on their menu but if you tell him JP sent you he will whip it up just for you. Enjoy

Friendly service. Mismatching décor. Restaurant food is above average but not top tier.
Amazing location, very beautiful, peaceful, service was great. Food is excellent.
Amazing location, right on the rocks, views of the ocean and whales. The breakfast though lacked in variety.
Lovely and cosy place.

Exceptional position, standing on the main deck you can see the whales passing by in the ocean! I was lucky enough to get an upgrade which led me to occupy a splendid suite with an ocean view and a large balcony. Excellent cleanliness and excellent cuisine.
A gigantic bay where whales and their calves are visible from the shore. A charming 5* hotel, surprising with its tiered architecture. Friendly welcome but reserved room not available. Solution found with a smile. Very good service. Excellent meals and choice of wines for an all-inclusive system. A great experience.
What a struggle to find it... But we were rewarded in the end! a boutique hotel with attention to detail, dedicated, exceptional service and a superb chef. An unforgettable honeymoon, I recommend a minimum of 2 nights. Whale watching is guaranteed and the location is perfect. If it wasn't so far away I would go back every weekend! Well done, really good
Right by the sea on the cliffs and the sound of the sea at night, which you can hear from bed, are certainly unique. Be sure to take the Cliff Pathway in both directions, which leads directly past the house. The location is simply sensational.||Rooms a bit plush, but well maintained.||Meals very good, but not perfect in relation to the great restaurants in the greater Cape Town area. (Half or full board makes no sense at all in SA, where you can eat delicious food on every corner).||Price/performance ratio not good even in the low season - overall too expensive!
Absolutely prestigious hotel perched on the cliff with a spectacular view of the ocean.||Whale sightings are very likely, the cuisine still needs to be improved but we Italians are known to be difficult. I absolutely recommend it
Wonderful stay in a charming hotel located a little outside the tourist Hermanus||The welcome is very professional ||You are quickly seated on a deckchair, glass of champagne in hand, observing and admiring the multitude of southern whales that have come to the bay for giving birth||This house has incredible charm ||The hotel has three infinity pools, the last one overlooking the Indian Ocean ||The dining room is pleasant and, like the whole hotel, faces the bay ||The bedroom is very well furnished in a colonial style, high four-poster bed, is approximately forty m2 and has a beautiful terrace overlooking the ocean||The magnificent bathroom (30m2), opens onto a large side terrace mountain||Champagne, alcohol, mini bar are at your discretion||The breakfast buffet is good||On the other hand, the quality of the meals is very poor despite good service||Let's hope that this point will be improved to make it a place stay Perfect
It's a shame we were only there for 2 nights. We really liked the hotel because it offers great sea views, great food and service and you can walk on the cliff paths directly from the hotel.
A wonderful location on a cliff over the Atlantic, incredibly friendly and guest-oriented staff and Mediterranean architecture are a perfect basis for an unforgettable holiday.
Excellent level of care and attention for the customer, beyond the already high standard in South Africa.||We will not forget the fantastic breakfast on the cliff, looking at the sea and reading the newspaper and the kindness and helpfulness of all the staff.||We will return there next year for sure
It was just great, just beautiful
Only the bathtub was too small but otherwise wonderful😊
Fantastic view, great service! Gladly again at any time…
We spent one night at Birkenhead. 12-15 years ago this was definitely paradise, but unfortunately it no longer meets today's standards. The rooms are clean and practical, although cluttered with all sorts of knick-knacks. The breakfast/restaurant area is very outdated and the choice of colors and furnishings are more like that of a mid-range hotel. The breakfast and dinner offerings are average, but the quality is in the lower third. ||During our stay, 5 of 11 rooms were occupied and in the evening some dishes were not available because either the calculation was incorrect or the chef was not satisfied with his skills. For €800 in a double room you would expect first class just because of the room price, but it is in no way. The staff is attentive, but not at the desired 5* level. ||The loungers cannot be used in the morning because neither the crumpled cushions nor the cushions are brought in at night and are therefore wet in the morning.||The breakfast table is also prepared in the evening, so the sugar, napkins and plates are also wet in the morning. ||||The location of the house is great, even though it is 4km outside of Hermanus.||The prices are not justified compared to the excellently run Ellerman House in Cape Town.
Hamanasu is a tourist spot for whales, but I stayed there in May, which is out of season. We couldn't see whales from the hotel, but since it was the off-season, we and one other family were able to spend some time relaxing. ||All-inclusive including 3 meals and drinks including alcohol. ||The room is luxurious on the second floor of the new building. Since it was off-season, I was doing some maintenance on the old building. Apparently the ocean front superior room in the old building is the best place to see whales. Whale season is September and October. ||I went there by rental car, and the next day I washed it and it was sparkling clean. ||When you stay here, we recommend you to spend your time at the hotel instead of taking a walk on the sea or doing nothing.
Lovely hotel with exceptionally hospitable, friendly staff. beautiful room with fresh flowers on the beds upon arrival. Beautiful place to have breakfast, extensive breakfast menu. Nice place to relax
