Reviews of Three Birds Country House
Cannot recommend this accommodation enough! Everything is very well designed/decorated, and is extremely clean and well-kept. There is secure parking inside. We received fantastic service from Martin, who helped us out last minute with a place for the night. As we arrived he was already waiting at the gate to let us in, and he woke up at 4am to let us out the next day. He communicated everything up front before we arrived (expected loadshedding times, making sure we grabbed food on the way, etc) and overall we are very happy with our stay!
Our new favourite stop between Pretoria and Cape Town. Beautiful spacious rooms with interesting authentic décor. Martin was a great host. I couldn't fault them on anything. We loved the coffee pods in the room. Thank you for a lovely Karoo stay and experience. Until next time :)
What a wonderful 4 days we spent here. Super comfortable rooms, very spacious and clean. The double showers are a dream. The pool was a bonus for my grandson. Nothing was too much trouble for Septima, what a wonderful young lady. Well equipped kitchen which is open for guests to use. I highly recommend you stay here and enjoy the home from home experience.
Stayed in Room #2
Spacious rooms, nicely decorated and appointed.
Excellent lamb chops, veg and potatoe wedges. Beer was extremely cold 👌
Bath seemed unclean though so skipped that and watch out for the wooden step out the shower, it’s not stable.
Would still recommend this establishment as a stop over.
Three Birds Country House is the only option you need to look at when looking for a stopover on a long roadtrip.
Arriving in the tiny town of Richmond, you are able to see every option of stay from the main road and Three Birds by far looks the most secure. With high walls and a parking entrance off the main road, it looks clean and modern.
Once parked in the shaded lot, we were greeted kindly by Jan who gave us our keys and showed us to our room where we were greeted even more kindly by the beautiful room and Cherry on the house.
The room?
Impossible to fault. Spacious with free wifi, DSTV, Aircon, Espresso machine with capsules, as well as a well equipped honesty bar. Bedding was stunning. Clean and very comfortable. The en suite bathroom is just the same. A double shower and the best fittings with great soaps and shampoo. The towels were so nice, they could very well have been brand new.
Dinner was served (on early request) and it was exactly what we needed. A limited menu of the perfect middle of the Karoo soul-food. We ordered the Lamb Pie as well as the Chicken Curry which were both beautifully made and perfectly filling.
Our search for a good stop-over has ended right here and yours should too.
The rooms were comfortable, and the hostess was very pleasant and friendly. There was heating in the room (the area is icy cold in the winter) but I found the room extremely dark, with poor lighting and no windows, except in the bathroom. There's plenty of space, and also an extra bed and a cot in the same room. Plenty of plug points and adapters. Kettle and fridge but no microwave. Pool and activity room in the complex.
Lovely spacious bedrooms and bathrooms. Each one unique.
Real Karoo hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can most definitely recommend staying at the Three Birds. Mary was a real star!!
- Secure parking
We arrived quite late and didn’t spend too much time on the premises, nor did we eat anything on site. A summary of points:
- Good host
- good shower with shower amenities
- comfortable bed with amazing pillows
- beautiful rooms
- free WiFi
- really thought about little touches within the rooms, capsule coffee and coffee machine, teas, rusks, bar fridge stocked if you want to buy, complimentary sherry
- aircon that works
I loved the room. It is a perfect mix between modern luxuries and old world charm. I enjoyed my 2 night stay and will definitely recommend it to anyone.
Was very cold jan was very politehad 2 dogs with me also. Pity I could not stay longer but was on the way to gordons bay. Security was excellent for your vehicles.

Hospitable hosts....clean/fresh....situated in a well restored old house....interesting food....value for money....the village itself deserves a visit
A little jewel in the Karoo, stylish and comfortable and tastefully decorated Hot water was a problem that night
Nice halfway stop between joburg and cape town, just wish there was a restaurant on site.
Very nice 👌 thanks to everyone for a wonderful experience.
Stunning peaceful and beautiful
Big rooms with decent bedding and pillows. The night life is busy and noisy but with their nice big baths and beds, noise is soon forgotten... Anyone can check in with them with peace of mind
Hospitable. Friendly. Clean. Tidy. An oasis in the dry karoo.
